About Athena Female Empowerment CIO
At Athena, we believe boxing should open doors, not close them. Every girl who laces up gloves deserves access, opportunity, and a fair shot—no matter her background, postcode, or connections. We exist for the hard workers, the quiet grafters, and the athletes who are often overlooked. Our purpose is to break down the barriers that too often hold female athletes back.
Athena is not just about creating champions; it’s about building confidence, empowering young women, and showing them that there is a whole world of boxing beyond the four walls of a local gym. We are here to inspire female boxers to dream big and to prove that their talent and determination can take them anywhere.
Athena Female Empowerment CIO was officially established in May 2024 as a UK-registered charity (Charity Number: 1208141). Founded in August 2023 by Paul Smith, alongside Jade Ashmore and Vicky Woodhouse, Athena was born out of a clear need: to ensure female boxers across the country have access to elite training and competitive opportunities. The founders recognised that too many girls were missing out simply because the right doors weren’t open to them—Athena was created to change that.
Why We’re a Charity
Athena operates as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), meaning all our work is dedicated to public good. Any donations or funding go directly into programmes, resources, and opportunities that benefit the athletes we serve. No profit. Just purpose

Who We Support
We work with young girls, teenagers, and women aged 10–30 from all walks of life. Whether they’re picking up gloves for the first time or looking to reach the national or international stage, Athena is here to support their journey.

Our Mission
To empower women and girls across England through access to community amateur boxing and physical activity, helping them build confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging.
We’re not just developing boxers—we’re developing leaders, mentors, and role models.
Our Work in Action
One of our proudest moments to date was our first international training camp, held in Ireland in September 2024. Over the course of four days, 28 boxers aged 12 to 30 trained at the Edenderry All-Female Club. They took part in technical sessions, sparred with Irish national champions, and pushed themselves to new levels of performance.
However, this camp was about more than just hard rounds and intense training. It was an opportunity to build connections and community. Our squad shared meals, sang karaoke, and created memories that will last a lifetime.

What We Do
Elite Coaching & Squad Sessions
We run regular all-female training camps, coaching days, and sparring events across the country, from grassroots to elite-level preparation.
Community Outreach
Athena reaches into local communities to support participation among underrepresented groups, ensuring boxing is open to all—not just the “chosen few.”
Empowerment Through Sport
Boxing teaches more than how to throw a punch—it teaches discipline, self-respect, and the ability to overcome challenges. These are life skills we help girls carry with them far beyond the gym.
International Opportunities
From exchange camps to overseas training, Athena opens the door to global experiences—building international friendships and unforgettable memories.
Why It Matters
Our mission is not about ticking boxes or favouring big names. It’s about proving that with determination, the right guidance, and equal opportunities, every female boxer can grow and thrive. Athena brings together novices and elite athletes alike, showing that inclusion is more powerful than elitism.
Trips like the Ireland camp change lives. They remind young women that boxing is bigger than weekend shows or local rivalries. These athletes belong on the world stage, and we are here to help them get there.
